China and Oman have active exchanges in the cultural and people-to-people fields. In 1981, in order to promote the traditional friendship between the two countries, the Omani replica sailing ship “Sohar” retraced the historic route of the renowned Omani navigator Abu Obeid Al-Qasim, departing from the Omani port city of Sohar and arriving Guangzhou in July.
In December 1995, the Omani side funded the construction of the “Sohar” Monument in Guangzhou. In 2014, the reconstruction of the monument was completed. In September 2018, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Oman, Oman’s Minister of Information H.E. Dr. Abdulmunim bin Mansour al Hassani attended the unveiling ceremony of the Sohar Monument in Guangzhou.
In December 2000, the Omani side funded the construction of the Islamic-Arab Cultural Exhibition Hall at the Quanzhou Maritime Museum. In October 2009, Oman also donated funds to build a prayer hall at the historic Qingjing Mosque in Quanzhou.
In July 2007, Oman established the “The Sultan Qaboos Chair in Arabic Studies” at Peking University to support Arabic language teaching and promote cultural exchanges between China and Oman.
In 2005, the Chinese government approved Oman as a destination for Chinese outbound tourism. In 2007, the China–Oman Friendship Association was announced. In 2010, the Oman–China Friendship Association was formally established.
In recent years, Chinese performing arts troupes have visited Oman many times and received a warm welcome. In January 2015, the “Happy Chinese New Year – Splendid China” cultural program appeared at the Muscat Festival, attracting wide attention and positive responses from the local public. Since then, different Chinese performing groups from across the country have participated in performances at the Muscat Festival for many consecutive years.
In November 2018, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Oman, China International Television Corporation and CGTN Arabic jointly produced the documentary series “Eternal Friendship,” which was broadcast simultaneously on CGTN Arabic and Oman National Television.
In January 2019, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Acrobatic Troupe visited Oman to participate in the Muscat Festival and staged a special “Happy Chinese New Year” performance organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and the Chinese Embassy in Oman, receiving a positive response.
In April 2019, the “Silk Road and Frankincense — China-Oman Historical Relations Symposium” and a photo exhibition on China-Arab historical exchanges and the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up were held at Sultan Qaboos University. The events were jointly organized by the Chinese Embassy in Oman, the State Council Information Office of China, the Oman–China Friendship Association, and Sultan Qaboos University.
Also in April 2019, the opera “Lakmé,” jointly produced by China’s National Centre for the Performing Arts and the Royal Opera House Muscat, premiered in Oman.
In July 2019, a photography album titled “China Through Omani Eyes,” produced by four photographers from the Oman Photographic Society during a visit to China, was exhibited in Salalah.
In September 2019, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 40th anniversary of China–Oman diplomatic relations, the Suzhou Ballet Theatre from Jiangsu Province visited Oman to perform at the National Day reception and staged a special performance. About 600 guests—including representatives from Oman’s political, business, and academic communities, foreign diplomats in Oman, and members of the Chinese community—attended the performance and gave it high praise.
In December 2019, the “Dunhuang Cultural Heritage Photography Exhibition of China” was held in Muscat, organized by the China Photographers Association, the Dunhuang Academy, and the Oman Photographic Society, with support from the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Chinese Embassy in Oman.
In October 2020, the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a ceremony to issue commemorative stamps marking the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Oman. The stamps feature Al-Jalali Fort of Oman and the Great Wall of China, while the bottom of the stamp depicts the navigators Sindbad and Zheng He facing each other across the sea, symbolizing the millennia-long friendship between the two countries.
In March 2021, the Implementation Program of the Cultural, Health, and Media Agreements between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Sultanate of Oman was signed in Muscat.
In December 2021, the China–Oman Youth Digital Cultural Industry Exchange Week, jointly organized by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Oman’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, was successfully held.
In May 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Oman held the completion ceremony of the Zheng He Monument in Salalah, Dhofar Governorate. Through its artistic design and craftsmanship, the monument reflects the story of Zheng He’s fleet sailing across the oceans more than 600 years ago and promoting friendly exchanges along the Maritime Silk Road. The bronze plaque on the monument contains a QR code introducing the historical ties between Zheng He and Oman as well as the construction process of the monument.
In August 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Oman held a ceremony to issue commemorative covers marking the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Oman. The cover features the treasure ships of Zheng He’s voyages 600 years ago and the wooden sailing ship “Sohar” used by the famous Omani navigator Abu Obeid in his successful voyage from Sohar to Guangzhou about 1,300 years ago, commemorating the millennium-long friendship between the two nations.
In November 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Oman and the National Museum of Oman jointly held the launch ceremony for the Chinese-language website of the National Museum.
In October 2024, the opera “Un Ballo in Maschera,” produced by the National Centre for the Performing Arts of China, was staged at the Royal Opera House Muscat. The NCPA also specially organized a “Chinese Night” concert to allow local audiences to experience Chinese music and culture.
In November 2024, the Omani Ministry of Education and the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of China signed the Cooperation Plan on Chinese Language Education, under which Chinese language elective courses are expected to be introduced in four public secondary schools in Oman starting in September 2025.
In February 2025, the Chinese Embassy in Oman and Sultan Qaboos University jointly held the Second Chinese Cultural Day.
In May 2025, the Chinese Embassy in Oman and the Omani Ministry of Education jointly organized the first International Chinese Language Day in Muscat. The event also featured a China–Oman friendship photo exhibition, a panel discussion titled “Learning Chinese: Preparing for the Future,” an award ceremony for the “China Through Omani Eyes” works collection campaign, the launch of the “Chinese-style Modernization in the Eyes of Omani Friends” initiative, and a variety of interactive Chinese cultural activities.
