I. Transportation
Air Travel: The largest airport is Muscat International Airport. Salalah Airport is a major airport in the south.
There is no airport shuttle bus, metro, or similar public transport between Muscat International Airport and the city center. Travelers must rely on taxis or private vehicles.
Road Transport: This is the primary and most convenient mode of transport within Oman. Highways connect major cities, but road conditions in rural and mountainous areas are generally poor. Long-distance buses operate between Muscat and cities like Sohar, Sur, and Salalah.
Urban Transport: Public transport within cities is underdeveloped. There is no rail system. Taxis are the main mode of transport. The capital, Muscat, has a public bus service, but routes and stops are limited.
Driving:
Oman has very strict traffic laws. Violations can result in heavy fines or even detention.
Visitors staying less than 3 months can drive using their home country driver's license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Those staying longer than 3 months must obtain an Omani driver's license.
The Omani driving test has three parts: traffic sign recognition, a yard test (maneuvering), and a road test. It is considered quite difficult.
Vehicles in Oman are left-hand-drive and drive on the right side of the road, similar to China.
Drivers are generally courteous but drive fast. They often tailgate vehicles driving slowly in the left (overtaking) lane until they move over.
Drivers should maintain safe following distances and always wear seatbelts.
II. Electricity
Standard voltage is 220V (same as in China).
Plug type is the British standard BS 1363 (three rectangular pins).
III. Communications
Major cities like Muscat have widespread 4G or 5G network coverage.
Major mobile operators are Omantel, Ooredoo, and Vodafone Oman.
To purchase a local SIM card, valid identification is required. SIM cards are available at the airport, major supermarkets, and shopping malls.
IV. Useful Local Contacts
Oman Country Code: +968
